Engineering & Technology

The Simplify Science™ curriculum explores technologies that have developed and impacted life on Earth and includes multiple opportunities for students to use engineering practices to solve problems and refine their solutions.

Life Sciences

These topics cover the patterns, processes, and relationships of living things in our world. Ranging from a single molecule, to ecosystems and the biosphere as a whole, the Simplify Science™ life science curriculum explores the interconnected systems and processes that occur on Earth over time.

Physical Sciences

These topics cover the physical and chemical subprocesses that occur within all systems and processes on Earth. The Simplify Science™ curriculum covers physical science topics including matter, forces and interactions, energy, and motion.

Earth & Space Sciences

These topics cover the processes that take place on Earth, Earth’s place in the solar system, and Earth’s place in the galaxy. The Simplify Science™ curriculum covers a wide variety of topics from the behavior of Earth to geology to the study of Earth’s systems.

Children are born investigators.

Children from all backgrounds come to school with scientific background knowledge and the ability to reason in a sophisticated manner. The Simplify Science curriculum builds upon the knowledge students have developed and their preexisting ideas about the world by expanding and refining prior knowledge and conceptions.

Scientific understanding builds over time.

Students need opportunities to develop scientific concepts over several years. Using a thoughtfully developed progression of skills, the Simplify Science™ curriculum has mapped out the order of scientific concepts, allowing students to mature in their thinking and grow their scientific understanding over time.

We must give students time to explore core ideas & practices.

Narrowing the core ideas that students will focus on each year allows students to explore each concept in-depth and develop a deep, meaningful understanding of the concepts they study. Our curriculum provides a coherent, aligned approach to the standards that prepares students for deeper levels of scientific exploration in future years.

Science & engineering require both knowledge and practice.

Providing opportunities for problem-solving, social interaction, and investigation is essential to students’ development of scientific ideas. The Simplify Science™ curriculum provides the foundational knowledge students need to complete hands-on learning through labs, investigations, and engineering design, allowing students to collaborate and develop their scientific understanding.

Connecting to students’ interests and experiences is imperative.

Scientific exploration can spark curiosity when it is tied to students' own individual experiences and interests. The Simplify Science™ curriculum draws on students’ interests and experiences through interactive notes, scientific discussions, student-led inquiry, writing activities, and other opportunities.

All students can learn science.

We believe that equitable opportunities to engage in engineering design and learning scientific concepts is key. The Simplify Science™ curriculum provides all students with access to quality materials and educational resources. We believe in supporting teachers in their science instruction so that rigorous, engaging science lessons are accessible for all. Read our equity statement for more information.

Our core principles are based on the research done by the National Research Council of the National Academies and shared in "A Framework for K-12 Science Education: Practices, Crosscutting Concepts, and Core Ideas". This research was used to create the Next Generation Science Standards, which our program is based on.
